Those Who Have a Family Work More Efficiently

Jochen Menges from the University of Zurich explores how family and work can strengthen rather than conflict with each other. His research shows that family is a powerful source of motivation: people who work to support or set an example for their loved ones often use their time more efficiently and perform better—especially in jobs that offer little intrinsic satisfaction. This motivation doesn't only apply to parents, but also to those driven by siblings, partners, or extended family.

Menges emphasizes that whether family and work are seen as compatible starts in the mind. Viewing them as mutually supportive instead of competing priorities reduces stress and increases fulfillment. Employees should feel empowered to ask for flexibility—for example, to attend a child’s school event—while also openly communicating with their families about professional demands. When both sides understand each other's needs, it creates a more balanced and sustainable dynamic.

To make this work on a broader scale, Menges calls for more family-friendly structures in the workplace—such as flexible hours, autonomy over work location, childcare options, or even activities involving family members. Companies that recognize and support family-driven motivation can gain a competitive edge, especially as the concept is still emerging. At the same time, Menges warns that overcommitment fueled by family pressure can lead to burnout, underscoring the need for healthy boundaries and shared responsibility.
